The Challenge

Introduction

In the burgeoning world of cryptocurrency trading, Zebpay aimed to revolutionize the market with a secure and user-friendly platform named ZEBB. I joined the project as the lead Product Designer after it had already begun, taking over from a former designer who was leaving the company. This transition involved a handoff overlap process to ensure continuity and maintain the project’s momentum. While there was an existing style guide, I worked to formalize the design system with components to ensure consistency and scalability. Our goals included rolling out new features in a continuous development approach that allowed users to trade Bitcoin and Ethereum quickly and securely with delight.

Project Kickoff

When I first joined the ZEBB project, the goal was clear: to develop a simple and ultra-secure crypto exchange. The challenge, however, lay in designing an interface that could handle the complexities of cryptocurrency trading while being intuitive enough for both novice and experienced traders.

Project Objectives

The primary objectives for ZEBB from a UX perspective were:

  1. Speed and Efficiency: Design an interface that enables users to trade cryptocurrencies in seconds.
  2. Security: Ensure the platform is perceived as ultra-secure, building trust with users.
  3. Simplicity: Create a user-friendly experience that simplifies complex trading operations.

The Execution

Challenges and Solutions

The process of designing ZEBB presented several key challenges that required innovative solutions:

Learning Blockchain and Cryptocurrencies

Starting from zero, I immersed myself in learning about blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies. I engaged with industry experts, read extensively, and participated in workshops to gain a deep understanding of the domain. This knowledge was crucial in creating a UX design that resonated with the target users.

Collaborative Approach

I worked closely with the Product Owner (PO) and the development team throughout the project. This collaboration was essential for aligning the design with technical constraints and business goals. The PO provided extraordinary support, helping bridge any gaps between design and development. In addition, we were able to remotely run user testing to validate assumptions of the user flows.

Stakeholder Engagement

I attended regular Scrum of Scrums ceremonies with stakeholders on the client side. These meetings were invaluable for demonstrating new features and gathering feedback. Supported by my extraordinary PO, I conducted demos of the latest design iterations, showcasing the progress and incorporating stakeholder input into subsequent design refinements.

The Impact

My contributions to our process included extensive prototyping, creating a consistent design language across screens, presenting new features, and collaborating with QA and development teams to fix bugs and cover all user scenarios. Working on a dedicated Scrum team and participating in all ceremonies further solidified my advocacy for Agile methodologies.
